GK Capsule October 2021

Welcome to Endeavor’s GK Capsule for the month of October 2021. October is a month of Nobel Prize announcements. The month also saw disturbing scenes of violence at Lakhimpur Kheri and destruction by heavy floods in Uttarakhand. Facebook also revealed its new brand identity as ‘Meta’ in the last week of October. Let’s look at these and other news highlights of the month.

In the category of ‘Places in News’ –

Very heavy rains battered Uttarakhand for nearly 3 days, beginning from 17th October, leading to floods, landslides, and massive destruction of property. The total death count rose to 75, including 12 trekkers. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said that the heavy rains caused damages worth Rs 7,000 crore across the state.

In the category of ‘National News’ –

Nine people lost their lives in the violence that erupted during the farmers’ protest in the Lakhimpur Kheri district of Uttar Pradesh on 3rd October. The farmers claim that a car from a convoy belonging to Union minister Ajay Mishra Teni’s son Ashish ran over the protesting farmers. Four farmers died as vehicles mowed down the protestors. The angry farmers dragged out and allegedly lynched the four persons belonging to BJP. The ninth death is reported to be on a journalist. While the police have arrested Ashish Mishra, son of Union Minister Ajay Mishra, in the case, however, the Supreme Court expressed its disappointment over the investigation by the U.P. Police. The Supreme Court has appointed a retired judge from outside U.P. to monitor the investigation.

In the category of ‘Science & Tech’ –

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced on 28th October that the company is rebranding itself as ‘Meta’. While making the announcement, Zuckerberg said that the name “Facebook” doesn’t fully reflect everything the company does now. The rebranding comes as part of Zuckerberg’s effort to transition from merely a social media company to developing an immersive digital world known as the ‘Metaverse’. The Metaverse is a digital space where people will interact, work, play, learn and create products and content. The Facebook app, Messenger, Instagram, WhatsApp, Oculus, Workplace, Portal, and Novi are now grouped under the new brand identity of ‘Meta’.
