MICAT 2020 Exam Analysis (1)

MICAT 1 for admissions to MICA’s PGDM and PGDM-C programmes for the year 2021 was conducted on 5^th December 2020.

This year, owing to the COVID pandemic, just like other entrance tests MICA also shortened its test. So, from 105 questions in the Aptitude test, MICAT this year had 80 questions in the Aptitude Test and the time allotted was reduced from 105 minutes to 80 minutes.

Hence, the overall duration of the test came down to 135 mins (2 hours 15 minutes) from the usual 165 minutes (2 hours 30 minutes).

Part 3 marking system: +1 and -0.25

The sectional, in-depth MICAT 2020 (1) Exam analysis is as follows:

Part 1: Psychometric Test:

A total of 150 questions were to be answered in the time span of 30 minutes. Of these around 35 questions were of Agree and Disagree & True and False types. The rest 115 questions were the ones having two contradictory statements.

Students had to grade each of these statements as per the following options:

Agree Moderately
Agree Strongly
Disagree Very Strongly
Disagree Moderately
Disagree very strongly

One important point to note this year is that answering all questions was not compulsory in the psychometric test. The instructions given mentioned that no marks would be given for any unattempted question

Part 2: Descriptive Test:

This part can be further divided into 2 parts of which the first was “Argument or Opinion Writing” The topic this year was “‘Since time cannot be stored, therefore, Time Saved is Time Wasted’.”

This was followed by 3 questions, wherein the first question asked the aspirants to present 3 arguments supporting the topic and 2nd question asked the aspirants to present 3 arguments against the topic.

Both these questions were of 10 marks each.

For the third question – Aspirants had to write down 3 points suggesting steps that a young manager should take to ensure no time is saved. This question carried 20 marks.

The second part or the fourth question of the Descriptive test was “Creative Writing” in which the aspirants had to connect 4 pictures, write a story and mention the sequence in which the pictures are used in the story. The four pictures were of:

A farmer milking his cow
Kids lying down on playground in a happy mood
A shoe with shoelaces untied
A colourful scarf hanging on a window

This particular question carried 30 marks.

A total of 25 minutes were given to attempt the entire Section of Descriptive writing.

Part 3: Aptitude Test

This part had 80 questions and the time given for the same was 80 minutes. There was a negative marking of 0.25 marks in this part.

The part can be further broken down into 4 sections namely:

Section 1: Divergent and Convergent Thinking:

This section had a total of 20 questions.

The approximate question distribution for this section is as below:

Among these, 6 questions on Word Association were moderate and 3 questions on Analytical Reasoning were easy, 3 questions on Data Sufficiency can be classified as easy to moderate, whereas aspirants found the Statement-Assumption and Visual Reasoning based questions to be Moderate to Difficult. The questions from Analytical Reasoning were the ones from Blood relations and Coding-Decoding.

Difficulty Level: Moderate

Ideal Attempts: 12-14

Ideal Time: 25 minutes

Section 2: Verbal Ability

This section had a total of 20 questions.

The approximate question distribution for this section is as below:

Of the two Reading Comprehension passages, one of the passages was quite lengthy around (450-500 words) whereas the other was short (around 200 words). The longer passage was easier to attempt. All parajumbles consisted of 5 sentences and can be classified as easy to moderate. Both questions on grammar were quite easy. The Synonyms and Antonyms questions can be termed as moderate.

Difficulty Level: Moderate

Ideal Attempts: 13-15

Ideal Time: 25 minutes

Section 3: Quant and Data Interpretation

This section had a total of 20 questions.

Among these 1 question each on SICI, Time and Distance and Probability can be classified as Difficult, whereas those based on Profit & Loss, Statistics & Quadrilaterals can be classified as Moderate. The rest of the questions were of easy to moderate difficulty.

Difficulty Level: Moderate to Difficult

Ideal Attempts: 12-15

Ideal Time: 25 minutes

Section 4: General Awareness

This section also had 20 questions, of which 5 questions were based on brands, taglines, and advertising. Of the rest, there were around 5 questions on current affairs, and the remaining were based on static GK and these ranged included topics like awards, books and authors, economics, and geography.

In comparison to last year the General Awareness section, this year had more difficult questions.

Difficulty Level: Moderate to Difficult

Ideal Attempts: 7-8

Ideal Time: 5 minutes

MICAT 2020 (1) Exam Cut-offs:

Please note that MICA only provides the Score of the “Aptitude Test” section in the final scorecard. It directly eliminates those students who do not clear the Psychometric Test.

Also, it would be important over here to note that MICA uses both CAT/XAT percentile and MICAT score to shortlist aspirants for Group Exercise and Personal Interviews. So the MICAT Cut-offs will vary as per the CAT/XAT Percentile. Also, this year the aptitude test was 80 marks as against 105 marks in the previous years.

So, considering these factors an Aspirant getting 90+ percentile in CAT/XAT would need 22-25 Marks for a GEPI call from MICAT.

An Aspirant getting between 85 and 90 percentile in CAT/XAT would need around 27-30 marks, whereas the aspirant who gets between 70 and 80 percentile in CAT/XAT would need 35-40 marks.

Really insightful!

Tiny correction, though. MICA also considers GMAT scores alongwith CAT and XAT.
