CMAT 2018 Exam Analysis: Morning Slot

Structure of CMAT 2018 was as per the CMAT standards with 25 questions in each of the four sections. Aspirants had 3 hours to attempt the test paper.

Section wise analysis is as follows:

 

Quantitative Techniques and Data Interpretation (25 Questions):

Except 2 question from Data Interpretation (Table, Pie Chart), all the questions were from Quantitative Aptitude. There was a significant share of 8 questions from Ratio and its Application. These questions varied from Ratio, Alligation and Mixture, Time and Work and Time, Speed and Distance. Among them, Time and Work had an unusual weightage of 3 questions (2 easy, 1 moderate). Algebra had a share of approximately 5 questions from Linear Equation, basic factorization and Inequalities. Unlike last year’s CMAT, where Inequality had no presence, this year, it had a share of 3 questions (2 easy, 1 moderate). There were two questions from Percentage and its Application: one from Simple Interest and the other from Profit and Loss. Geometry had a share of only 3 questions unlike last year’s CMAT which had 5/6 questions from Geometry. One question from Trigonometry again made its presence this year. Permutation and Combination, Probability, Set theory and Progression had a share of 1 question each. There was no presence of Numbers, Logarithm, Function and Data Sufficiency.

Overall, the questions from this section were easy to moderate. With Approximately 14-15 questions easy to solve, an attempt count of 20 can be termed good with a suggested time of 45 to 50 minutes.

 

Logical Reasoning (25 Questions):

The questions in this section varied from Syllogisms, Cubes, Blood Relations, Coding-Decoding, Series to classic questions on Arrangements and Puzzles.

Unlike past trend, in this year’s AR, no question was very time consuming. Arrangement and Puzzles, despite having its usual presence of 13 to 15 questions, and among them 6-7 questions of 5*5 or 4*5 information, wasn’t time consuming as the options were easy to eliminate. Rest all the other topics (enlisted above) had weightage of approx. 2 questions each.

However, as compared to the other sections, this section still was the most time consuming one.

Overall, the questions from this section were easy to moderate. With Approximately 17-19 questions easy to solve, an attempt count of 20-22 can be termed good with a suggested time of 60 minutes.

 

Language Comprehension (25 Questions):

This section can be divided in two parts: Reading Comprehension based questions (15 Qs) and Verbal Ability based questions (10 Qs)

The section tested reading skills of the aspirants with 4 RCs, out of which one had 6 Questions and the other three had 3 questions each. The topics covered were: Philosophy, Science and Technology, Management (Sales), Restaurant Review.  8 to 9 of these 15 questions were easy to solve. There was a presence of questions asking: Profession of Author, Tone of Author, Author’s Attitude towards certain topic (mentioned in RC) and around 3/4 inference based questions.

The Verbal Ability comprised of 2 FIJs, 1 Fill-in-the-blank, 2 /3 Synonym, 2 Antonym, 1 Analogy and 1 Word Usage. Surprisingly, There was no presence of Critical Reasoning, Parajumbles, Strengthen/Weaken Argument, Grammar, Statement Assumption and Statement Conclusion.

Overall, the questions from this section were easy to moderate. With Verbal Ability a little less time consuming as compared to the past trend, an attempt of 22 can be termed good with a suggested time of 50 minutes.

 

General Awareness (25 Questions):

This section had questions ranging from Government Schemes, Indian Constitution, Laws and Rights to Science and Technology and Arts. Each of them had a presence of atleast two questions.

Overall, 14-15 attempts can be termed good in a suggested time of 10 minutes.

 

Overall Percentile Score:

An overall score in range of 255 to 260 can be called equivalent to 98%  and a score in range of 220-230 can be called equivalent to 94% for morning slot of CMAT 2018.
